It’s unexpected I think That’s what makes it beautiful Two souls adventuring Beside brick walls Fingers tracing every edge Running through fields Daring each other to ask the sun why it leaves each night Climbing into broken down cars Rummaging through the “forgotten” And finding something special to hold onto Trying out a new camera because that’s what people do Flashes of color and light and dance floors Crazy midnight conversations that pour into dawn’s light Waking up with the sun without ever falling asleep All of it Unexpected Sometimes there is silence A silence to be embraced Hugging moments when nothing is uttered Just sitting together Sipping on hot tea and reading each other’s minds Remembering childhood stories and randomly starting to smile Not breathing or drinking tea Anymore Because the laughter is there And it’s loud And embarrassing And it pushes out worry And it heals the soul And It’s unexpected The way friendship comes to be
I was sitting on the edge of a fountain with a friend a few nights ago. We were talking, laughing, and crying. Then this small conviction hit me…Why do I take friendship for granted?
I do. I really do. I forget how special friends truly are.
With that on my mind, I went around Texas State last week and found 25 random people. I asked them this simple question: “What is one quality you value in a friend?” Their answers were raw. I wasn’t expecting to be as affected by the video making process as I was. It kind of caught me off guard how willing people were to answer. It made me smile more. It opened up conversations with total strangers. It challenged me to remember those I love and to be the type of person who loves others well.
Don’t just ask yourself who your friends are–ask yourself what kind of friend you are. “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:12-15).” It’s unexpected the way people come in and out of our lives. Don’t take friendship for granted.
